Today, Columbus Day, stopped by Dunkin Donuts and picked up a large cup of coffee before going in to work. Its a Holiday and most of the workplace was shut down thus limiting the coffee options. So made a stop at Dunkin which has the best coffee to go in the Land in my judgement, and grabbed a cup. Columbus Day, a day in which we celebrate an explorer. Google tells readers that “in 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue bringing to the New World a bounty of wonder’” It went on to list that bounty. It was horses, turnips, grapes, wine and COFFEE. Between 1492 and 1503 Columbus made four voyages between Spain and the Caribbean. And the BEAN had made its LANDING!

One of the lows here in 2022 was the cancellation of CNN’s “Reliable Sources”. It was a GREAT show about the Media. It examined the story behind the story. It covered a wide range of media topics from TV and movies to corporate power players in the media industry. There was an incredible amount of content. And to this viewer the show was still going strong. But the last on air action on the show seen by these eyes was that of host Brian Stelter drinking a cup of coffee. For full disclosure, don’t know the exact content of the CNN cup he had in his hand but am willing to bet huge sums that it was coffee. At any rate, it was from “Reliable Sources” that this blogger learned what a blog was. It was a decade or so ago and back then the host was Howard Kurtz and blogs were emerging as the leading social media platform. At the time much was being said in the mainstream media about the “blogosphere.” Came to the party late but the party is still going on. And there’s a big pot of coffee in the back.[smile].

taptapnacupacaffee? My inquiring mind led me to the NCA website. NCA stands for National Coffee Association. Wanted to know the origin of coffee. The site quickly informed me “No one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered, though there are many legends about its origin.” Immediately they swung it to “An Ethiopian Legend” which went “Coffee grown worldwide can trace its heritage back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian Plateau. There legend says the goat herder Kaldi first discovered the potential of these beloved beans. The story goes that that Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with other monks at the monastery and knowledge of the energizing drink began to spread. As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian Peninsula it began a journey which would bring these beans across the globe.” With all this talk on sports talk radio here in 2022 about the GOAT-Greatest Of All Time-centering on the likes of LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky and their ilk, maybe Kaldi’s goats should be in the conversation.
